Joseph W. Alsop of Washington, widely-read newspaper columnist and author, died yesterday at his home after a long illness. He was 78.

Mr. Alsop was the dean of nationally syndicated political columnists when he wrote his last column and retired in 1974. He had been writing his combative columns for 37 years and was considered a master of the English language as well as of the Washington power puzzle.
