Algae Blamed for Md. Fish Deaths

Fish-killing algae have been blamed for killing 20,000 fish in Maryland waters, according to state officials.

The so-called "ambush" algae, first detected in the Chesapeake Bay three years ago, have been blamed for the deaths of millions of fish from the mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast since the single-celled microorganism was discovered in North Carolina in the 1980s.

Findings reported by the Maryland Sea Grant College represented what may be the first link between fish deaths in and around the Chesapeake Bay with Pfiesteria piscicida. The algae may explain various fish kills that ...
