District Tap Water Passes the Test

Washington's tap water tested cleaner than federal safety standards require in September after three consecutive months of violations, Environmental Protection Agency officials said yesterday.

Tests at 244 designated taps throughout the city found only two samples that contained total coliform bacteria, or less than 1 percent, EPA officials said. Federal law allows no more than 5 percent of samples to contain bacteria. Contamination violated that standard during June, July and August, although EPA officials emphasized that the water was safe for most people to drink.
