Fifty years ago today, Red Sox third baseman Jim Tabor got out of Joe Cronin's doghouse.

He did it with a bang -- on the Fourth of July, of course.

The 22-year-old rookie stepped out of the shadows and into the record book by hitting four home runs in a doubleheader against the Athletics at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Three of the round-trippers, including two grand slams, came in the second game.

Tabor had just returned to the lineup after serving a week-long suspension handed down by manager Joe Cronin because of what the media termed "off-field behavior." That meant he spent too ...
