In the euphoria over the Solidarity landslide in Poland's weekend elections, it should not be forgotten that as recently as two years ago, Lech Walesa was living under virtual house arrest, and other Solidarity leaders were under actual arrest or in hiding underground.

No one then would have predicted any possible chain of events that would restore legal status to Solidarity, free its leaders, and allow it to mount a successful political challenge to the ruling Communist Party.
