GORE VIDAL TAKES ON 'BILLY THE KID'

You have to hand it to Ted Turner. In an industry full of owners
who look at their networks as nothing more than commodities, Turner
is a breath of fresh broadcasting air. One week he's offering CNN
without commercials to schools, the next he's airing an eccentric
new film, "Gore Vidal's Billy the Kid" (at 8 and 11 tonight on
Turner's new network, TNT; repeated at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 14, and 8
p.m. Thursday, May 25).
If this version reminds you of Arthur Penn's 1958 film about
William Bonney, "The Left-Handed Gun," with Paul Newman, it's no
