STATE SPENDING IS UP 9.6 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR, TREASURER INDICATES

State spending is up nearly 10 percent over last year, despite statements by the Dukakis administration that it is doing everything possible to hold expenditures down.

Records kept by the state treasurer indicate spending is up 9.6 percent, or $1.2 billion, through the first 10 months of the fiscal year, a period when tax receipts have risen just 4 percent.

State Treasurer Robert Q. Crane said the spending figures include federal funds and interest payments, in addition to state expenditures, but he said the numbers are an accurate gauge of the pace of state spending. Another measure, ...
