in Beirut. He dies after being tortured by his captors.
June 25 -- As Congress threatens to cut off military aid to
contras, Reagan, advisers meet to consider funding options.
July -- Lt. Col. Oliver L. North discusses raising private funds
for the contras with retired Air Force General Richard V. Secord,
who begins arrangements for four arms sales over the next year.
July 6 -- At the urging of CIA Director William J. Casey, Saudi
Arabia begins monthly $1 million deposits into a bank account to
help contras buy arms.
