BIRD'S RETURN OFF FOR SEASON?

Larry Bird appears to have written off this NBA season, but he plans to return at nearly full strength next season.

So said Bird during an informal news conference in the hallway outside the Celtics' locker room before last night's game against the Cavaliers at the Garden.

"If the Celtics want me to go out and play, I'll play," Bird said. "But if anything happens, the responsibility is theirs.

"I don't think I can be that important to the team if I can't play the way I want to play."
