CAGE: NO MAESTRO, PLEASE!

Last year, the Boston Symphony asked John Cage to compose a
piece, so he wrote one and called it "1O1." The middle digit is a
capital "O," not a zero, because, Cage explains, "a thin zero isn't
a round, perfect circle."
One hundred and one is the number of players in the orchestra,
and Cage has composed an independent part for each of them. There
is no part for a conductor in this piece, which has its first
performances at the BSO this week, and when Cage explained this to
music director Seiji Ozawa, Ozawa said, "It doesn't matter whether
