"I am stunned by my own niceness," said composer Leon Kirchner, leafing through an album of letters of tribute assembled on the occasion of his recent retirement from Harvard University after a long career as one of its most challenging and distinguished teachers and of his forthcoming 70th birthday tomorrow.

Over the last few weeks, there have been many private celebrations for Kirchner, and on Monday night there will be a public one when he conducts a special free concert of the Harvard Chamber Orchestra in Sanders Theater; pianist Jeffrey Kahane will be the soloist in one of Kirchner's ...
