RISE OF LYME DISEASE TIED TO INFESTED DEER
|
The most intense concentration of Lyme disease ever
documented has been found in a neighborhood near a Massachusetts
nature preserve that was overrun with tick-infested deer,
specialists report.
Researchers say their work shows how rapidly the disease
can spread once it arrives in a community that has lots of deer.
Lyme disease is characterized at first by a skin rash,
headache or fever and later by arthritis and heart damage.
"The message is that it can be terribly explosive," said
Dr. Andrew Spielman of the Harvard School of Public Health, a
co-author of the report.
