Volume bound in the wood of the Mary rose
|
Just two inches (5cm) by nine (23cm) is a small volume bound in
the wood of the wreck that is now on display in Portsmouth. As the
oldest vessel retrieved from a marine grave, the Mary Rose was lost
in full view of the king at Spithead on July 20, 1545, and such was
the shock at losing the flagship, when her remains were discovered
not far off shore it was not long before there were serious attempts
to raise her.
She eventually broke the surface of the waves in 1982, and so
ended her life as a warship, which began on July 14, 1544 when the
French reacted to Henry VIII's blockading of ...
