New Fort Madison prison makes fiscal sense
|
Critics of an Iowa Board of Corrections recommendation to build a
new prison in the state believe it's the laws that should be
changed. If Iowa's mandatory sentencing laws were fixed, our prisons
wouldn't be so crowded, they say.
That may be true. But the recommendation comes not just because
Iowa's prisons are filling up, but because they're falling down.
Parts of the Fort Madison prison predate Iowa's statehood. When
legislators got a tour of the prison recently, prison officials
showed them plumbing problems and crumbling concrete.
