Ames Department Stores of Rocky Hill, Conn., the new owner of Zayre discount stores, will announce Monday that 74 Zayre stores will be shuttered in early 1989, putting about 7,500 people out of work.

One Massachusetts store will close -- in Pittsfield -- but most of the stores are in the South, including Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. Six Wisconsin stores will close: four in Milwaukee and two in Racine.

Three Ames discount stores also will close, for a total of 77, leaving the Ames-Zayre system with a total of 840 stores and pro forma sales of about $5.4 ...
