LIKE A MIGHTY OAK, CATHEDRAL RETURNS

YORK, England - Queen Elizabeth II added royal pomp yesterday to
the reopening of the fire-ravaged south transept of York Minster
cathedral, but it was the archbishop of York, John Habgood, who set
the cathedral throng of almost 2,000 to buzzing and chuckling.
Habgood noted that the great fire of July 9, 1984, which
threatened to destroy the entire cathedral, had provided "rich soil
for theological speculation."
Habgood was referring to critics of liberal Anglican thinkers
who charged that the fire -- which experts say was almost surely
caused by lightning -- was an act of retribution ...
