As excitement builds for the imminent launch of the first US manned spaceflight since the horrifying destruction of the Challenger and its crew on Jan. 28, 1986, many people probably feel that if Discovery's upcoming mission is successful the US space program will be back in business and competitive again and the problems of the last 2 1/2 years will be over.
