CULGOORA, Australia - The first big radio telescope array in the Southern Hemisphere began operating yesterday, opening a new window on the little-explored southern sky.

Dr. Ron Ekers, the director of the instrument named the Australia Telescope, said it can be used to look at the center of the galaxy, the Magellanic Cloud, and other sights not visible to observatories in the Northern Hemisphere.

Ekers said the Australia Telescope will study black holes and pulsars.
