HONORING STYRON'S CONTRIBUTION

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. - It seemed an unlikely setting to honor a man whose sense of history is so tinged with tragedy, whose brooding novels have probed some of humanity's darkest moments, from American slavery to Auschwitz.

The morning was brilliant and cool, the tent was circus-striped, yellow and white. The pines were whispering amiably on the grounds of the MacDowell Colony, as William Clark Styron Jr. was awarded the Edward MacDowell Medal for his outstanding contributions to American literature.
