A WISTFUL DEPARTURE FOR VIGILANT

ABOARD THE CUTTER VIGILANT - This 210-foot Coast Guard cutter,
for the past 24 years adopted as a family member by New Bedford's
200 or so fishing families, found a new home port yesterday at New
Castle, N.H., steaming slowly inside the Piscataqua River just
before noon in mist and rain.
Welcoming the vessel were a small band of sign-bearing crew
relatives, well-wishers, Coast Guard officers and Portsmouth, N.H.,

Though smiles abounded in New Hampshire, it had been a
difficult departure for both the ship and the fishing people of the
southeastern Massachusetts city ...
