LYRES' 'A PROMISE . . .'DELIVERS THE GOODS

Jeff Conolly, lead singer-songwriter-organist of the Boston-based
Lyres, was backstage after a gig at the Metro in October 1986,
enthused about his group's upcoming album. "It'll be called
'Playpen,' he said between swigs on a wine cooler, "and on the
cover, I'll be in an adult-sized crib with bottles of Stoli and
porno magazines going 'Wah! Why did she leave me?' The goal is to
do songs about such pain, but rising above."
Well, the album's out, and most of what the lead Lyre promised
turns out to be, well, a lie. Or maybe just a premature (immature?)
