A 1986 visit to Poland by Catholics and Jews from Greater Boston has resulted in the first conference on Catholic-Jewish relations ever sponsored by the church in Poland.

Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, Pope John Paul's successor as archbishop of Krakow, opened the weeklong conference late last month at his residence.

"Your presence here . . . opens a new and fresh chapter in the history of Jewish-Christian relations in Poland," Cardinal Macharski told participants.
