ALCOHOLISM'S ROOTS STILL HOTLY DEBATED

In its ruling that the Veterans Administration need not
consider alcoholism a medical disability, the Supreme Court
sidestepped the issue of whether alcoholism is a disease with
strong biological roots or primarily a behavioral problem with
social causes.
However, some specialists said the court ignored prevailing
medical beliefs about alcoholism in deciding that the VA could view
alcoholism as a condition of "willful misconduct" in determining
