ALAN PATON, NOVELIST WHO DEPICTED APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA; AT 85

JOHANNESBURG - Alan Paton, whose novel "Cry, The Beloved Country" became one of the world's best-known depictions of apartheid, died of throat cancer yesterday at his estate outside the port city of Durban. He was 85 and had been released from a hospital Monday to spend his last hours at home.

"He went peacefully, happy to have been in his own bed," said his wife, Anne.

Blacks and whites joined in paying tribute to the country's foremost author and champion of racial justice.
