THE LEGACY OF GEORGE S KAUFMAN

The Boston Globe | March 30, 1988| | Copyright

Although George S Kaufman will probaby hurl a wisecrack from his grave when his centennial is held next year in Pittsburgh, his nephew, Dr. Allan Friedlich, readily announces that a centennial celebration is, indeed, in the works. According to Dr. Friedlich, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, the celebration will signal his uncle's lasting contribution to the American theater. And, if her health continues, Friedlich's 91-year old mother, Ruth Kaufman Friedlich, will participate. She is George S Kaufman's sister.

"My mother and Uncle George were very close," Friedlich said ...

Ballot for the mallet Should Wisconsin junk its election of judges? On Feb. 6, primary election voters across the state will nominate two of the seven candidates vying for a single seat on Wisconsin's Supreme Court. It's pretty unusual that a judicial election, even for the state's highest court, would draw so many contenders. In fact, of the 38 judgeships on general election ballots around the state on March 19, only 10 are being contested. Yet Wisconsin persists in claiming to have an elective judiciary. Is that tradition worth preserving, or is it plagued with too many problems? The State Bar of Wisconsin takes up the issue for discussion next Friday at its Midwinter Convention in Milwaukee. Meanwhile, in the columns below, a Milwaukee attorney and a justice of the state Supreme Court offer contrasting ideas for reform. Appointing judges means surer justice

Keep church and state separate; Ten Commandments don't belong in court In arguing for making the Ten Commandments a fixture of every county courthouse, Dennis Pape, of the Christian Family Association, claims to know that the founding fathers intended to establish a Christian nation. However, he offers no historical evidence of what the founding fathers intended. Allow me: When Thomas Jefferson was asked by the Baptists of Danbury, Conn., for clarification of the establishment clause of the First Amendment, he explained that his intent was to build "a wall of separation between church and state." What could be clearer? In the Treaty of Tripoli about 10 years after the Constitution had been ratified, we find this: "The Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." That treaty passed through the Senate review process without a murmur of disagreement. Pape points to the fact that the Pledge of Allegiance mentions God. What he doesn't seem to realize is that the phrase "under God" was not added to the pledge until 1954. Pape claims, "the Ten Commandments is not religion. It's a document given by God to Moses." What could be more religious than a document alleged to have been written by God? Actually, Pape himself offers the very best argument for keeping the Ten Commandments out of courthouses when he says that atheists and people who belong to a religion other than Christianity don't fit in the picture, the implication being that whether such people are treated fairly by our legal system is irrelevant. It is precisely this arrogant, warped view a view that completely misses the true founding principles of liberty and equality which would be perpetuated by the presence of the Ten Commandments in courtrooms.
