Ford introduced Probe, a front-drive counterpart to its
rear-drive Mustang, to New England this week, showing the new
Mazda-built coupe to dealers and the press simultaneously. The car
neatly fills a gap in the Ford lineup -- there has long been a hole
where a front-drive performance coupe should have been.
There had been talk about a replacement for the Mustang, but,
as the auto business in general and Ford business in particular
pulled out of the doldrums the last few years, it became apparent
that killing off Mustang would be unpopular and unprofitable. The
