THE PERFORMERS
One of the lyrically romantic tenor saxophonists in jazz, Stan
Getz started on bass and then bassoon in New York City. In 1942,
when he was 15, Getz quit school to join Dick Rodgers' orchestra;
his age was discovered by the authorities and he was ordered to
return home. He stayed home until he was 16 when he finally broke
away for good, picking up a job playing tenor with Jack Teagarden's
band. At 17 was working with the Stan Kenton orchestra.
