PARIS - Artist Andre Masson, one of the last great exponents of the surrealist movement, died in his sleep Wednesday in his Paris home, his son Luis Masson said. He was 91.

Mr. Masson was a painter, graphic artist and illustrator whose work influenced American painters of the 1940s.

With Salvador Dali, Mr. Masson was considered one of the last great living surrealist painters.

Referring to himself as a "painter by instinct," he developed "automatic drawing," spontaneous linear expressions of his personal mythology, and phantasmagoric sand paintings.
