It was 1911 when Miriam Look, at age 5, first met Donald Baxter MacMillan.

MacMillan, who had been in a support party with Admiral Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Hensen when they found the North Pole on April 6, 1909, was 37 and was visiting Miriam's father and mother, M. Jerome and Amy Look, in their Clinton home. Look, a reservoir and dam engineer, was a friend and booster of MacMillan's exploration dreams.

"This is the man for me," she recalled telling herself as she sat on MacMillan's knee listening to stories of the sea.
