MAYOTTE WINS AFTER STRUGGLE

STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. - Yesterday may have been Tim Mayotte's 27th birthday, but he wasn't about to receive a gift from Todd Witsken.

Mayotte battled the unseeded upstart for three sets before prevailing, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Volvo International tennis tournament.

Mayotte, seeded fifth in the tourney and ranked 14th by the ATP, was hindered by a lack of motivation on his part and pesky play by Witsken in the second set, but he overcame both in the third.
