For five years, beginning in 1958, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross was acclaimed as a revolutionary jazz vocal group. What distinguished them from other singing units were their vocalizations customized to both the melodic statements and familiar jazz instrumentals solos. This innovative method of singing became known as vocalese. Jon Hendricks was responsible for writing the intricate, difficultly structured sets of lyrics, his first being attached to Jimmy Giuffre's "Four Brothers" in 1957 which he sang with Dave Lambert.
