A certain test of whether a new word has made it into the language -- if not into everyday usage, at least into the common store of words -- is whether it can stand alone and its meaning can be understood from the context without the need of an explicit definition. That moment may have arrived for "glasnost."

The word began appearing in American newspapers and magazines in early 1986, about a year after Mikhail Gorbachev became the Soviet leader.
