MINNESOTA BISHOP TO LEAD UNIFIED LUTHERAN CHURCH

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Bishop Herbert W. Chilstrom of Minneapolis was elected presiding bishop yesterday of the newly united Evangelical Lutheran Church in America after two days of close voting.

He defeated Bishop David W. Preus of Minnesota, head of the former American Lutheran Church, on the ninth ballot by a vote of 626-411.

Chilstrom, 55, has been a regional synod bishop of the former Lutheran Church in America in Minnesota.

A third candidate, Rev. William Lazareth, a New York City pastor and theologian, was eliminated on the eighth ballot.
