It was in Anne Yarowsky's bedroom that the worlds of writer Ann Beattie and artist Alex Katz first converged.

Yarowsky, an editor at Abrams Publishers, Inc., in New York, would look every night at the coolly composed subjects in an Alex Katz print and think of an Ann Beattie novel.

"The surface seemed so smooth and minimal but I always thought something was going on underneath," she says."And that's the same feeling I get when I read Ann Beattie's work.
