SETUBAL, Portugal - Jose Afonso, whose ballad gave the signal for the 1974 military coup that paved the way for the restoration of democracy in Portugal after 48 years of dictatorship, died Monday. He was 57.

Mr. Afonso, a folksinger and song writer known as Zeca, had suffered for five years from a degenerative muscle disease and died after repeated heart attacks, Setubal Hospital reported.

He was "a great artist of the people, a generous and principled man who has won the respect, admiration and friendship of all the Portuguese people," said President Mario Soares.
