Hermann Eilts; helped smooth road to Camp David accord

Speaking before a congressional panel in 1985, Hermann Eilts drew
upon his considerable expertise as an ambassador in the Middle East.
By then a professor at Boston University, he turned the hearing into
an impromptu class.
"I have yet to find an American president or a secretary of state
who has a clear knowledge of Islam and what it means," said Mr.
Eilts, who was in the US Foreign Service under seven presidents and
worked for Henry Kissinger when he was secretary of state.
Islam, Mr. Eilts told the panel, is a "religion of ethics, a
religion of justice," under which church and state operate ...
