Constitution Suspended In Burundi; Leader Says Coup Was to `Save' People

A day after the army toppled Burundi's civilian president, the newly installed head of state suspended the constitution while insisting that he had seized power only to "save a people in distress."

At a news conference today, Pierre Buyoya also promised to protect Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, the deposed president of this small central African nation, who fled Tuesday night to the American ambassador's home where he remains.

Buyoya, a 46-year-old retired major, took office Thursday in a coup that he insisted today was necessary to bring peace to Burundi, where more than 150,000 people ...
