The long journey of Robert Joseph Dole toward the Republican
nomination for president began with a moment of surprise at 10:18 on
an August morning 20 years ago. It was then, inside a crowded suite
at the Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City, that President Gerald R.
Ford, exhausted from an all-night session with his political
advisers, turned to an aide and uttered in his heavy-whisper voice:
"All right. Let's get Bob Dole on the phone."
No one in the Ford entourage knew Dole's telep...
