SAUDI KING FAHD, WESTERN ALLY, 84

King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, a crucial US ally in the Arab world
whose ties to the West invited a backlash among Islamic
fundamentalists, died yesterday in King Faisal Specialist Hospital in
Riyadh. He was 84, according to Saudi television.
Crown Prince Abdullah, the king's half-brother and the de facto
Saudi leader since King Fahd suffered a stroke a decade ago, was
named by the royal family to succeed him. King Fahd's funeral is
scheduled for today in the capital.
