ONE FAMOUS STOIC fell this month, just before a nation of stoics got the chancetragicallyto remind us of what the philosophy of reserve looks like in action. Two days before the British responded to the London terror attacks not with keening but with grim resolve and defiant pubbing-as-usual ("Stoicism in the City," Slate magazine called it), Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale died at the age of 81.

Stockdale was familiar to the public as Ross Perot's fish-out-of- water running mate in 1992. But within the Navy he was a folk hero for having endured seven-plus years in a Vietnamese prison campand ...
