Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938) made gilded images of a Gilded Age, even as the times shifted beneath him. Mostly, he painted women -- slim, elongated women seated alone in airless rooms, wearing diaphanous gowns that set off the languid curves of their long necks, milk-white shoulders and dangling arms.

Sometimes they hold an antique jar, look into a mirror or fondle a lute. At their most active, they romp in sylvan settings, holding garlands of flowers or listening to war...
