As the best weightlifter in the Arab world, Raed Ahmed was
considered Iraq's greatest living athlete. But as a member of the
country's repressed Shiite majority, Ahmed also was suspected of
harboring hostile sentiments against Saddam Hussein's regime.
When he carried the Iraqi flag into Olympic Stadium at the
start of the Atlanta Games, Ahmed said there was only one thought on
his mind: how to escape the misery back home by defecting to the
West.
