"Chain Reaction," a laughable action-adventure thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman, comes along with some good news and some bad news for a world accelerating toward the millennium.

On the plus side, our faith that science will provide solutions to such global problems as petroleum dependency and pollution is rewarded when researchers at the University of Chicago discover a new source of energy. It looks simple, actually. You just shoot a laser beam into some water inside a contraption that looks, in one character's words, like "a neutron cappuccino machine," and voila! ...
