Animals come in a seemingly outrageous profusion of shapes and patterns, with even related structures taking on a kaleidoscope of forms the span of a pair of arms, the spread of a bird's wing, the fins of a fish. How does our similar genetic lineage produce such different results? That's the question that drives the new field of evolutionary developmental biology, or "evo devo."
