AMTRAK SHUTS ACELA SERVICE OVER CRACKS BRAKE WOES IODLE TRAINS, DELAY THOUSANDS

Amtrak, the financially struggling national railroad, shut down its flagship Acela Express service, yesterday after cracks were found in almost 20 percent of the trains' brakes.

The suspension means no high-speed train service between Boston, New York, and Washington until Wednesday, a period that includes the busy travel weekend leading up to the Boston Marathon and spring break week of local public schools.

Even though Amtrak added more regular service, Acela passengers scrambled for alternatives at Boston's South Station yesterday. Amtrak said 10,000 Acela passengers were affected and that ...
