VATICAN CITY Pope John Paul II, the long-serving, long-suffering spiritual leader of the world's 1 billion Catholics, was nearing death at his apartment at the Vatican early this morning as thousands of people, many clutching votive candles or rosary beads, prayed for him in an overnight vigil outside his window.
