Look south on any clear evening at this time of year, and looking
back at you will be the brightest star in the sky: Sirius, the Dog
Star. It shines so bright for two reasons. It's bigger and hotter
than most stars, blazing with 22 times the light of our sun, and it's
also nearby, only 8.6 light-years away which makes it the closest
star visible to the naked eye from our latitudes.
But Sirius didn't always rule the sky. Twinkling far in its
