PORTER PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO PRISON ESCAPE FORMER FUGITIVE HELD WITHOUT BAIL

DEDHAM - Norman A. Porter Jr., convicted murderer, longtime
fugitive, and Chicago saloon poet, appeared in a Massachusetts
courtroom yesterday for the first time in 20 years, pleading not
guilty to prison escape.
His lawyer placed a hand of assurance on Porter's shoulder before
Norfolk Superior Court Judge Barbara Dortch-Okara ordered him held
without bail. Porter, 65, will remain in maximum security at MCI-
Cedar Junction in Walpole until he is due back in court April 12. The
