NFL Hall of Fame lineman John Hannah abruptly resigned recently, just one year after he was hired to rescue the high school football team as coach and serve as Somerville's citywide youth director.

The former New England Patriot has accepted a position at his alma mater, a private military high school in Tennessee, city officials said. He announced his resignation Feb. 10 and no longer works for the city.

"It's definitely a new job down South that sounds like something he would really like," said Mark Horan, a city spokesman. "That's all he said to the mayor."
