Salem Police Sergeant Robert Preczewski's 11-year-old son began to cry recently when he saw his dad picking up one of his old civil service study books.

Preczewski was just looking for a quick answer to a legal question, but his son didn't know that.

"He thought I was going into another one of my lockdowns," Preczewski said.

The book represents a time in Preczewski's life four times, to be exact when he prepared for a civil service exam, which determines whether public safety officers in his department will be promoted.
